Bullhead Cat Fishin'

It was a hot, humid summer night and we fished from the docks at a small lake.....

We had fished mostly all day, but we were'nt fished out yet, so we stayed after dark.
We pulled in a lot of fish that day.
The kids caught a lot of bluegill, sunfish, crappy, perch, and even shiners. It was a great day for fishing! The fish were very aggresive biters all day and evening.

We wanted to try to catch some bull-head browns. (catfish) So we used large night crawlers on a plain line with bobbers.

To get catfish, you need to set your bobber high on your line leaving your bait to dangle on the bottom. Catfish are commonly bottom feeders, so that's where you'll find them. Usually you can find them in a deep hole.

So, we set our lines in deep. Within seconds we were dragging in bull-heads by the dozens. If you've never caught a bull-head, then you would be interested to know that they make a quacking or squeaking noise. They almost faintly sound like a duck.
They usually swallow the entire hook, and their meaty face, leaves it hard to pull out. You will want to have either a fish hook extracter or needle nose pliers to remove the hook. They are also quite slimey, so you should wear gloves for a better firm grip.

They may be slimey, but if they are prepared and cooked right, bull heads can be the best tasting fish of all.

Fishing in the Lake

Fishing in our favorite lake is always a blast. The lake is never over crowded with boats, so it makes for a peaceful day, even if the fish don't bite! Just drifting around in the boat is a fisherman's paradise!

We were at the North end of the lake this day. My wife and I, and our three boys were catching small panfish by the hundreds. The kids were so excited. Occasionally, we would catch some nice sized bass.

My son yelled as he was reeling in his catch, "It's a big one dad, I know it is! I can feel by the way it's pulling!" He fought this fish with all his might. He acted as though he had no strength left to pull. We were really expecting a large mouth bass by the way he whinned. He finally got it to the side of the boat, and lifted it over the edge.
It was a perch, only about 7 inches long. It was hilarious! It was really funny because it was probably the smallest fish caught all day, but he was really proud of his trophy fish. You should have heard him bragging to his friends, saying "I caught the biggest perch ever! It must have been 24" long."

Well, we figured, let him be. Everyone has their own "Fish Tale."

An Afternoon At The Lake

It was early one Saturday afternoon. My family and I decided to go fishing at one of our favorite lakes. We got there around one o'clock. It was slightly overcast
that day, but it was still very hot. We all found a good spot and started to fish. We were fishing with nightcrawlers and live minnows that day.

I hooked on my minnow ,and cast it out a few times. I saw as I reeled it in, that there was a bass following it, but I could'nt see how big it was. I cast out again just a little further with the hopes that I would get that bass.

Sure enough that's exactly what happened. I started to reel my minnow back in when I felt a tug on my line. I stopped to let him get a good bite. When I felt another tug, I set my hook and started to reel it in. It put up a pretty good fight, so it took a couple of minutes to reel it in, but it was worth it because it was the biggest bass I had ever caught. It was about 18 inches long and about three pounds. It was a nice Large Mouth Bass.

That was the only bass we caught that day. We fished until evening just catching small rockbass and perch. We were getting ready to call it a day when my wife got a bite. She said, "this is no rockbass." She was right it was a nice bullhead catfish that was about 14 inches and about two pounds, but that was just the start she cast back into the same area a few more times. She caught three more small catfish.

Then it started to thunder, so we packed up our tackle and headed home.

That was a very good day at the lake.

Fishing Stories

Another beautiful day out on the lake, was a sunny Saturday followed by a warm summer night.
Fishing was great. Fish were biting all day long. We caught many fish that day. The kids caught pan fish, and a few small bass. My wife and I caught panfish, perch, and some very nice bass.
The bass were striking on just about anything. We used night crawlers and lures. Most of the bass we caught were 12 inches and more.
I was trolling along while my wife was casting into the cattails along the sides.
Her lure hit the water and in a flash she was cranking in an 18 inch large mouth bass. We stopped and anchored down. We stayed in this spot for a couple hours. The bass were thick and aggresive. We fished until we got no more strikes. We pulled up the anchor and moved on down the lake, with my wife fishing the sides as I trolled. This is how we found schools in various areas. Once we found a good school, we would anchor down and fish it till there were no more strikes. We did this all day.

It was a great fishing day indeed!

Fishing Stories

It was a hot sunny Saturday afternoon. We packed up the car and headed to Sandy Lake. We liked the little lake because the kids could enjoy catching many small panfish, while my wife and I could catch bigger fish.

The whole day was great fishing. The air was very humid and the fish bit all day long. We stayed until late in the day, but still were having a great time so we stayed until dark. The kids were still having a blast catching pan fish and my wife and I had caught several nice bass that day.

Mostly everyone else that had been at the lake that day was gone, so my wife and I fished from the dock. My wife found a deep hole in the lake where catfish were abundant. She cast over and over in that hole pulling out bullhead browns. She invited me to share her spot and we had a blast pulling out the cats one right after another.

Even though some of the bullhead cats were not very big, they are still a blast to catch because they put up a pretty good fight. We caught a few that were about 12 inches long.

It was another great fishing day!
